West Virginia University’s own student radio station, WWVU has been nominated for a College Radio Award for its locally produced specialty show, “The Morgantown Sound.”
The station is sending four student staff members to the College Music Journal’s annual Music Marathon convention in New York City on Thursday (Oct. 18). The annual marathon has been in place for more than 30 years.
U92’s “The Morgantown Sound” is nominated for a yearly award, “Biggest Champion of the Local Scene.”
The station has been nominated for various categories over the years, but this is the first time for “The Morgantown Sound,” which began its run of shows from the Gluck Theatre about a year ago.
“The students who work for U92 are very talented, and this nomination gives them the opportunity for their work to be recognized on a national level,” said Sabrina Cave, assistant vice president for Student Affairs Communications. “U92 provides hands-on experience for our students. It is truly a working student station.”
Alec Berry, producer of “The Morgantown Sound” who will represent U92 at the convention, says the nomination not only speaks well of the station but also of the Morgantown community.
“We would not have received the nomination without the bands and musicians working with us,” Berry said. “While I’ll be in New York representing for ‘Morgantown Sound,’ the show wouldn’t be where it’s at without the help of our audio engineer John Casey. He does much of the heavy lifting that I can’t.
“In general, I’m very excited about all of this. I never saw it happening, and I don’t know if we will win, but for now that doesn’t matter. I enjoy the fact we were recognized.”
Other WVU students traveling to the convention are Jacob Peirce, John “T.K.” Scherch and Emily Smith.
