Students at West Virginia University invited to a presentation by Brian Sims, former co-captain of Bloomsburg University’s football team, about his life experiences as an openly gay athlete and the current issues pertaining to LGBT rights on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in G20 Ming Hsieh Hall.

Sims, a policy attorney, remains the only former NCAA football captain to have ever come out, and is one of the most notable collegiate athletes to do so in any sport. He came out to his football team in 2000 after helping to lead them to the Division II National Championship game as their captain.

In January 2013, Sims will be sworn-in to represent the neighborhoods of Pennsylvania’s 182nd District in Center City Philadelphia. He will be the first openly gay state legislator in the history of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

He has appeared on NPR’s “Radio Times” and World Football Daily, and has been profile at OutSports, The Washington Times, ESPN, Gay.com, The Philadelphia Gay News, Compete Magazine, Philadelphia Weekly and The Daily Local News.

All students are welcome to this free event. For more information, contact Benjamin Seebaugh at bseebaug@mix.wvu.edu.
