WELLWVU’s Office of Wellness and Health Promotion is encouraging West Virginia University students to stay committed to physical fitness over the summer through its “moveWELL” campaign.

“moveWELL” is a part of WELLWVU’s “liveWELL” campaign, where each month pairs social marketing campaigns with educational activities to address healthy lifestyle behaviors.

According to the National Collegiate Health Assessment II conducted last February, the majority of WVU students (71 percent) participated in 90 minutes or less of moderate-intensity cardio or aerobic exercise per week, while the CDC recommends at least 150. Exercise is important for receiving important health benefits like maintaining a healthy weight and combating disease.

The “moveWELL” campaign will kick off on Wednesday, April 25 at 4:30 p.m. with a “liveWELL”-themed 5K relay race at the recreational fields beside the Student Recreation Center. After running a leg of the race, participants will take part in “liveWELL”-themed tasks before the next participants can begin.

The entrance fee is $10 per person with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Teams will consist of five people, with each member completing one kilometer and “liveWELL”-themed task during the race. Assistance can be given to individuals unable to find a team.

Prizes will be provided to the top team. The race is sponsored by WELLWVU and the Student Wellness Advisory Board. Interested individuals can go to http://well.wvu.edu/wellness/5k to register.

WELLWVU is also encouraging students to take the “moveWELL” 100-day Challenge. To participate, students try to get 30 minutes of exercise each day for 100 days. The goal is for WVU students to total at least 300,000 minutes of exercise over the summer.

Participants send a weekly log of their activities via Simple Form, email or Facebook once a week during the summer to be entered for prizes. Students must register for the moveWELL 100-day Challenge at http://well.wvu.edu/wellness/movewellchallenge.

Everyone who participates in either the 5K or the “moveWELL” Challenge will receive a moveWELL band. If students collect at least five different bands throughout the year, they are eligible to enter to win an iPad.
