Personal and institutional ethics guide public policy choices in today’s business world. Gustavo Arnavat, U.S. Executive Director for the Inter-American Development Bank, will discuss the essential role of leadership in shaping and driving public policy choices as the speaker for the 21st Charles L. Ihlenfeld Lecture on Public Policy and Ethics at West Virginia University’s College of Law.

His talk titled, “The Role of Leadership and Ethics in Public Service,” will be presented at noon Monday, April 2 in the Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom at the WVU Law Center.

The IDB supports efforts by Latin America and the Caribbean countries to reduce poverty and inequality. Established in 1959, it is the largest source of development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on projects that are sustainable and climate-friendly.

Arnavat was nominated for his position by President Barack Obama and confirmed unanimously by the Senate in 2009.

He has two decades of international legal and banking experience. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, he was a director and senior legal counsel at the Citi Private Bank in New York, where he was legal co-head of the Latin America market region. At Citi, he managed a wide range of legal, regulatory and policy issues relating to banking, investment management and brokerage services.

Arnavat received a J.D. from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Law, where he was an editor of the school’s Law Review.

Charles L. Ihlenfeld, a prominent West Virginia lawyer for 56 years, devoted much of his life to public service. These lectures, established in his memory, honor a life and career marked by significant contributions to the practice of law, to the legal profession, and to civic affairs of his state and community.

The event is free and open to the public and a reception will follow the talk in the WVU Law Center lobby. The lecture will be webcast at http://law.wvu.edu/ihlenfeld2012.
