The West Virginia University Police Department will be conducting a safety checkpoint on Wednesday, March 21st from noon to 2 p.m. on the WVU Campus, near Allen & Percival Hall on Evansdale Drive.

Safety checkpoints such as this are conducted to educate the public on the dangers of distracted driving as well as to increase usage of seatbelts and to promote traffic safety in general.

A checkpoint is a proven-effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing enforcement and education efforts, the UPD believes motorists can be encouraged to drive safely.

Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked for safety issues and compliance with traffic laws and drivers will be provided with safety brochures. Motorists with traffic violations may be issued citations but the primary focus of the checkpoint is education and awareness. Drivers should use additional caution in the area and should allow a few extra minutes of travel time in case of a delay.

Persons wishing to avoid the checkpoint can use Fine Arts Drive or other surrounding streets.
