WVU Multidisciplinary Studies students plan cornhole competition to benefit Medical & Dental Brigade
A group of students in the Program for Multidisciplinary Studies at West Virginia University has teamed up with the Center for Civic Engagement to participate in a service-learning project that is part of their capstone course.
The “Five Guys Group” will host a cornhole competition on April 14 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Evansdale Recreational Fields. The group plans to allow 64 teams of two members each to compete for prizes such as cash and gift certificates for first, second and third-place finishers. Each team will be responsible for a $10 ($5 per person) sign-up fee at the time of registration. Sign-ups will take place in the Mountainlair this week.
The proceeds will help the WVU Medical & Dental Brigade volunteers purchase supplies for their brigades and for the people in this underserved area of Honduras. The brigades are led by Melanie Fisher, M.D., Director of the WVU Health Science Center School of Medicine Global Health Program. The brigades also work in conjunction with Shoulder to Shoulder and village leaders in Ocote Paulino, Honduras to improve the life of villagers there and in the surrounding area.
The medical brigades travel to Honduras twice a year to provide medical care, children nutritional care, dental care, water purification filters, chimneys for improved home air quality and other services.
