West Virginia University music faculty member Michael Ibrahim will present a saxophone recital with piano professor Peter Amstutz at the Creative Arts Center, Sunday, March 11.

The concert begins at 5 p.m. in Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A) and is titled “American Works for Saxophone and Piano.”

The program will feature Sonata, Op. 19 (1939) for alto saxophone and piano by Paul Creston (1906-1985), “Distances Within Me” (1979) by John Anthony Lennon (b. 1950), and Sonata (1984) for alto saxophone and piano by William Albright (1944-1998).

Dr. Ibrahim enjoys an active career of solo, chamber, and orchestral work in both contemporary and traditional realms. He has performed throughout North America, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, Austria and Holland. Ibrahim studied at the Manhattan School of Music, Bowling Green State University, the Universit� Europ�enne de Saxophone in France, the University of Calgary and the University of Regina. He recently published the book “New Aesthetics in Contemporary Saxophone Music.”

Dr. Amstutz is professor of piano and coordinator of keyboard studies at WVU. A prizewinner in the Maryland International Piano Competition and medalist in the Casagrande International Piano Competition in Italy, Amstutz has performed throughout Europe and the United States. In recent years, he has also made frequent tours of Asia, presenting recitals and master classes in major cities of Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. He earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and, as a Fulbright Scholar, he also studied in Austria for two years at the Vienna Academy of Music.
