WELLWVU has expanded its Condom Caravan program to West Virginia University’s Health Sciences Campus.
Now, students can purchase discounted condoms at Mountaineer Station near the BFS Foods store in the intermodal facility. The Condom Caravan takes place each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“If we can increase accessibility to condoms across campus, we can do a better job at prevention of sexually transmitted infections,” said Colleen Harshbarger Director of WELLWVU’s Office of Wellness and Health Promotion. “We can only reach so far with a caravan on the downtown campus; this will allow more students to purchase condoms.”
Students can continue to purchase condoms in the Mountainlair each Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m. Prior to that event, WELLWVU offers a Condom Caravan Closet starting at 11 a.m., where students who may not feel comfortable buying condoms in public can do so in the Monongalia Room of the Mountainlair. WELLWVU offers educational activities during all Condom Caravans on subjects like prevention of STI. Condoms are 25 cents each and five for $1.
Harshbarger said each Condom Caravan averages more than 50 students. The two previous events in Mountaineer Station have been popular, as well.
In addition, WELLWVU is currently working with the Mountainlair and various fraternity houses on the possibility of including condom vending machines in those facilities.
