The next FIFA World Cup might not be until 2014, but West Virginia University is starting its fourth straight year of the Mini World Cup competition on Sunday (Oct. 2).

This year’s competition, which is organized by the International Student Organization, will include 20 teams of students and alumni from more than 30 different countries. The event is also part of Diversity Week.

“The tournament aims to promote diversity and create a space and place for students and alumni to interact not just among international students but among the whole comunity in Morgantown,” said Gary Laruta-Davalos, president of ISO.

Sponsors for this year’s event include the Mountaineer Maniacs, the Office of International Students and Scholars, the President’s Office for Social Justice, Ky’s Lounge and others.

The tournament will take place over a three-week period on the Mountainlair Green:

  • Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The winning team will earn an exact replica of the real FIFA World Cup trophy along with other prizes.
