West Virginia University students will hold a candlelight vigil on Wednesday (Aug. 31) for student Emily Spickler who died earlier this month.
The vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on the Mountainlair Plaza.
“WVU is truly a Mountaineer family. When a Mountaineer passes, we all mourn,” said Student Government Association Vice President Megan Callaghan. “Emily happened to be Greek, as well. The Greek community and the Mountaineer family will come together to mourn the loss and memorialize Emily in WVU history.”
Spickler, a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, will be honored with a moment of silence and speeches from sorority sisters.
All members of WVU sororities and fraternities are asked to wear their letters during the day and to the vigil on Wednesday.
Spickler, a junior journalism major from Shepherdstown, died of natural causes while studying abroad in Australia at the University of Southern Queensland.
Spickler was a dance minor and was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor society for first-year students, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She wrote for the student-run newspaper, The Daily Athenaeum, as well as two online publications; Fashionista.com and HerCampus.com.
