The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps, has once again named West Virginia University to its 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

WVU was one of 641 colleges and universities recognized by the agency this year for its work on community issues. The honor roll was begun in 2006, and WVU has been included every year.

“Congratulations to these schools and their students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the corporation. “We salute all of the Honor Roll awardees for embracing their civic mission and providing opportunities for their students to tackle tough national challenges through service.”

The corporation oversees the honor roll in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.

Honorees are chosen based on factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to long-term campus-community partnerships and measurable community outcomes following the service.

Earlier this year, WVU was one of only 6 percent of higher education institutions included in the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Community Engagement Classification.
