Step out of the traditional classroom and into the fresh summer air and sunshine with classes offered through the Off-Campus Summer Programs in the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design.
The program offers innovative and exciting courses in ecology and field study, outdoor skills and professional field experience that provide one to six elective credit hours to a wide-range of students.
“All of these classes are designed to take students away from the traditional classroom,” explained Beverly Hassler, coordinator of the program. “They’ll learn things through unique experiences rather than through textbooks.”
Highlights of this year’s program include:
- Adirondack Adventure (July 7-13) – Experience the Adirondacks of New York and explore the historical, political, cultural and social influences of the area. Develop an appreciation of the efforts to preserve this unique natural treasure as you interact with its people and land.
- Barley to Beer (May 16 – June 24) – Learn about the history and complexities of beer and beer brewing during this unique course. Walk away with knowledge to make logical, intelligent and concise arguments about the topics of beer, alcohol and health.
- Landscape Architecture Community Design-build Jamaica – Developed through a partnership with the WVU Community Design Team and Amizade, a global service-learning and volunteer program, this course introduces students to the practice and profession of community design in the United States and abroad. This two-part course will be offered June 1-10 and June 12-25.
- Pedology (Aug. 1-12) – The soils and landscapes of West Virginia and the northeastern United States are dynamic bodies that change in response to natural and human forces. Through hands-on experiences, students will gain practical training and knowledge on the proper field methods of soil description and site evaluation used by professional soil scientists.
- Tradition of Hunting (May 16 – Aug. 5) – For the hunting and wildlife management enthusiasts at heart, this online course covers the who, what, when, why and how of the tradition. Students will also learn about wildlife conservation, animal rights, gun control and ethics as they pertain to hunting.
