A West Virginia University student was injured early Saturday (Jan. 29) in an altercation outside the Mountainlair student union, and one person is in custody, charged with malicious wounding.

The injured student was being treated at an area hospital with wounds that are not considered life threatening, University Police Chief Bob Roberts said.

The fight between two groups of people occurred about 3:20 a.m. in the upper level of the Mountainlair’s parking garage. Joseph A. Jennings, 23, of Flushing, N.Y, was in custody and being questioned, Roberts said. Jennings is not currently enrolled at the University. The investigation is continuing and other arrests may follow.

There is no immediate threat to the University community, but Roberts issued this reminder:

“We remind everyone that if a verbal altercation begins, they should just walk away,” Roberts said. “If threats are being made, call the police immediately. Participating in these kinds of altercations can lead to physical injuries, arrests and even death.

“Please just walk away and avoid any risk,” Roberts said.
