Soon, it will be raining pumpkins at the West Virginia University College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

The 23rd annual Pumpkin Drop will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, starting at 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, in front of the Engineering Sciences Building.

More than 160 pumpkins are registered to be dropped 11 floors from the top of ESB with around 1,000 people of all ages – many from local schools—expected to attend. The WVU student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is sponsoring the event.

The goal is for participants to design an apparatus to protect their pumpkins when dropped more than 100 feet. A team of faculty, staff and students will monitor pumpkin containers for size, weight, safety and design, as well as judge how close surviving pumpkins land to the designated target.

Various engineering groups will have displays, and there will be refreshments for sale. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House.

ASME’s mission is to serve diverse global communities by advancing, disseminating and applying engineering knowledge for improving the quality of life; and communicating the excitement of engineering.
