West Virginia University’s four award-winning twirlers could be on the cover of the nationally distributed “Twirl” magazine, but they need the help of Mountaineers everywhere to get there.

WVU’s twirlers were selected out of 100 entries to compete for a spot on the magazine’s cover, and now they are up against 14 other universities for the winning spot. The cover winner will be chosen based on a national popular vote, which is currently taking place on Facebook. Voting ends Saturday (Oct. 23) at midnight.

To vote, go to http://go.wvu.edu/aDp2Uv and “like” the magazine, and then click on the photos for the competition and “like” WVU’s photo, also found at http://go.wvu.edu/aD6AH2 . All voters must be members of Facebook. Detailed instructions and links are also available on the WVU Marching Band website at http://wvuband.org/ .

As of Thursday morning, WVU was in second place for the competition. Penn State was in first.

“We really need the Mountaineer nation to show the country what great fans WVU has and vote WVU by this Saturday,” said WVU Twirlers’ Coach Paula Jo Meyer-Stout. “I hope our fans recognize that, on game day, there is no other university in this country that has featured twirlers with the exceptional performance abilities that we see on Mountaineer Field. Selection for the cover of ‘Twirl’ would not only be a deserved honor for them, but would bring recognition to both WVU and the marching band.”

This year WVU’s featured twirlers are: Donovan Sarr, an industrial relations graduate student of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and men’s three-time Collegiate National Champion and two-time Men’s World 2-Baton Gold Medalist; Kirsten Brown, a junior in wildlife and fisheries from Canton, Ohio, who has competed internationally and is a World Solo and 2-Baton Medalist; Whitney Godwin, a junior in journalism from Flatwoods, and International Solo Champion and 12-time winner of the Miss Majorette of West Virginia title; and Kayla Morris, a sophomore in exercise physiology from Parkersburg, and winner of the National Halftime Elite Twirler Championship and is a West Virginia Advanced Gymnast.

The twirlers will be featured this Saturday (Oct. 23) during halftime of the WVU-Syracuse football game.
