The WVU Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Academy of Distinguished Alumni. The academy honors WVU graduates who have attained national or international distinction in their profession or discipline.

This prestigious award has been a tradition since 1988 and has been bestowed upon nearly 80 WVU alumni, including Don Knotts, Jerry West, Dr. Nancy Nielsen, Sam Huff and Gen. John Craddock.

“The Academy allows us to showcase the successes of our most outstanding WVU graduates,” said Steve Douglas, president and CEO of the WVU Alumni Association. “It is important we recognize their achievements and use their work to inspire other alumni to do the same.”

Inductees are nominated by the general membership of the Alumni Association or their respective schools or colleges. Nominees cannot be employees of WVU, the WVU Alumni Association or the WVU Foundation, Inc., but the nomination process does not exclude members of the Board of Governors, Foundation Board, etc. Recent amendments to the academy bylaws include the acceptance of posthumous nominations. Also, the association will accept nominations throughout the year.

Such nominations will not have to be resubmitted each year unless the circumstances for the individual changes.

The association implemented an online nomination process for the academy. Individuals interested in nominating alumni for this award should go to the Alumni Association’s home page and click on the “Academy” nomination. Nomination forms can also be downloaded at http://alumni.wvu.edu/awards/academy or obtained by calling the Alumni Association. All nominations must be sent to the WVU Alumni Association, One Alumni Dr., P.O. Box 4269, Morgantown, WV 26504-4269, by Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at 4 p.m.

The Academy of Distinguished Alumni induction ceremony will take place on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at The Erickson Alumni Center.
