WHAT: Nine West Virginia University Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants.

WHEN: Friday, May 14 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: WVU National Research Center for Coal and Energy

WHO: Colonel Bruce T. Hellen will give the commissioning address. Hellen serves as the commander of the Air Force ROTC Northeast Region. He is responsible for supervising, evaluating and facilitating the operations of 36 ROTC units. As a career helicopter pilot, he has served in numerous H-1 and H-60 leadership and command positions. Hellen has 3,800 hours of flying experience.

• Ian Alpert, aerospace engineering, pilot
• Richard Bielecki, criminology, intelligence
• Herbert Doss, criminology, air battle manager
• Lance Gower, criminology, pilot
• Evan Grinstead, industrial engineering, pilot
• Mitchell Haverkamp, aerospace engineering, engineer
• Estevan Herrera, business administration and management, air battle manager
• Paul Jones, geography, logistics officer
• Zevz McCarty, general studies, navigator

BACKGROUND: Air Force ROTC is a four-year program. All students who are commissioned through their participation in ROTC undergo a variety of training, during which they are evaluated on their leadership, academic and physical skills.
