On the eve of the West Virginia University men’s basketball team’s appearance Thursday at the Sweet 16 in Syracuse, N.Y., Morgantown and University police are encouraging all fans to display responsible behavior, regardless of the game’s outcome.

“We have met with the Morgantown Police Department and other agencies to plan for a safe game night on Thursday, and we urge all fans to act appropriately to keep our community safe,” University Police Chief Bob Roberts said.

Morgantown Police Chief Phil Scott said his department has a security plan in place for during and following the game, which includes posting extra officers in key locations around the city. Scott said his agency is equipped to handle any unexpected problems, but he’s asking all fans to use good judgment Thursday night.

WVU Vice President for Student Affairs Ken Gray also called on students and fans to act responsibly.

“Our team has played at a high level all year and now has a chance to show the nation why WVU deserves to be in the Elite 8 – and possibly the Final 4 and beyond,” Gray said. “Let’s show the team and nation our respect by celebrating and acting responsibly – win or lose.”

He reminded students that unlawful acts are subject to WVU disciplinary action along with fines and legal ramifications.

The game tips off at 7:27 p.m.
