West Virginia Campus Compact recently named eight West Virginia colleges as recipients of Global Youth Service Day mini-grants.

West Virginia Campus Compact, housed at West Virginia University through the president’s office, is the state’s lead agency for Global Youth Service Day 2010, and is able to provide the mini-grants through a $2,000 Lead Agency Grant from Youth Service America.

The eight campuses selected for mini-grant funding were: Bethany College, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Fairmont State University/Pierpont Community and Technical College, Glenville State College, Marshall University, New River Community and Technical College-Raleigh County Campus, Potomac State College and Shepherd University.

Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. This year, projects funded by mini-grants in West Virginia will tackle a myriad of issues, including recycling, health and wellness, violence against children, hunger, and the disaster in Haiti.

Established in 1988, GYSD is the largest service event in the world and is now celebrated in more than 100 countries.
