For the first time, West Virginia University is participating in the nationally respected American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment.

A random sample of students is being contacted through WVU’s student e-mail service, Mountaineer Information Xpress, and is being asked to complete the survey.

The confidential questionnaire asks about student health behaviors. It takes about 20 minutes to complete.

The study assesses alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, sexual health, weight, nutrition, exercise, mental health and personal safety and violence.

This year, the assessment has been revised to include updates and new items on sleep behaviors, self-injury and the use/abuse of prescription drugs.

Students are randomly selected to participate. Each participant is given the chance to win and choose from various prizes, including $25 gift certificates to the WVU Bookstore, $50 spa certificates, $25 restaurant certificates, $15 i-tunes certificates and preferred seating at a WVU basketball game.

The survey will provide WVU administration and staff with important findings about student health behaviors and attitudes that will be used to develop programs that better address student health needs.

Students that receive an e-mail inviting them to participate are highly encouraged to do so. This is a unique opportunity to play a role in making WVU a healthier place to be.

Invitations will arrive in MIX e-mail between now and March 5.
