High school students: Do you have thoughts about how drinking affects choices, careers and families?

Area high school students are invited to enter a writing contest sponsored by West Virginia University’s Department of Community Medicine. The winner will be awarded a Nintendo Wii videogame console.

“Drunk or Orderly: Life is About Choices” is the title of the contest created by the department’s Alcohol Education Program. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 9.

“The contest is designed to encourage students to consider the impact of alcohol use and abuse on their lives and encourage positive decision-making,” said Ruth Kershner, Ed.D., associate professor in the Department of Community Medicine. “We would like them to be honest, thoughtful and show a strong point of view as they describe how using alcohol can influence one’s choices and future and affect family, education or career goals.”

There is no word limit for the essays, which should be mailed or e-mailed (rkershner@hsc.wvu.edu) to Kershner by the Nov. 9 deadline. Include your name with the submission as well as name of your high school. The mailing address is P.O. Box 9190, Morgantown, WV 26506. For more information about the contest, contact Kershner by email or at 304-293-7440.
