The West Virginia University Police Department has added two new K-9 teams to its force, Bella, a 2-year-old golden retriever and Blek, a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever.

Bella is teamed with Officer Joshua Cook to provide explosive detection coverage for the West Virginia University campus and major events and assist community when requested. Bella and Officer Cook completed a three-month program and received certification from Mountaineer Working Dog Association. The training was provided by Chiodo Kennel located in Barbour County.

Blek is teamed with Officer Travis Thomas and they provide narcotics detection coverage for the campus and community when requested. Blek and Officer Thomas were trained by Ultimate Working Dogs in St. Albans, WV. Blek is trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin and meth.

Both dogs are friendly, but should not be approached without their handler’s approval.

“We welcome these new additions to our team and look forward to their specialized training aiding us and keeping our community safe,” said Chief Bob Roberts.
