Following a national search, Dr. Barbara Copenhaver Bailey has been named the assistant vice president for West Virginia University’s Student Affairs.

Dr. Copenhaver Bailey, a 16-year Student Affairs employee, most recently served as the director of Student Support Services/TRIO program for 12 years. During her tenure, she was instrumental in securing more than $5 million in funding for the McNair Scholars, Student Support Services and Upward Bound TRIO grants.

As the assistant vice president she will oversee Child Development and Family Support Services, The Daily Athenaeum, Student Affairs Assessment Council, Student Affairs Communications, Student Affairs Grant Administration, Student Affairs Web Development, Student Organizations Services including Greek Life and the Student Government Association, Student Support Services, Upward Bound and U-92 Radio Station.

“Barbara is a true advocate for West Virginia University students,” said Ken Gray, vice president for Student Affairs. “Her experience and commitment to WVU students is the perfect match for this position. We are very excited that she will continue to play a vital role in Student Affairs.”

In addition to serving as director of Student Support Services, she teaches several courses through Student Affairs, Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences and Shepherd University.

Prior to working at WVU, Dr. Copenhaver Bailey taught social studies in the public school system and for the federal government on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. She is active in the West Virginia state TRIO professional association, West Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Davis College Alumni Association previously holding office in all three organizations.

Dr. Copenhaver Bailey holds three degrees from WVU: a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, a master’s degree in agricultural and extension education and a Doctoral of Education in curriculum and instruction.

In addition to her work, she enjoys spending time with her husband Jeffery and sons Clay and Zeke, traveling West Virginia and volunteering with 4-H.
