A longtime West Virginia University professor of safety management has been honored for excellence and leadership in safety education by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
Daniel E. Della-Giustina, a professor in the “College of Engineering and Mineral Resources’ Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering won the ASSE President’s Award, the highest award bestowed on members, at the organization’s recent annual conference.
Della-Giustina is a longtime member of ASSE and was elected a Fellow of the organization in 2004. He also serves as the advisor to WVU’s student chapter of ASSE, mentoring future safety professionals.
“Dr. Della-Giustina has mentored hundreds if not thousands of safety professionals who have benefited from his expertise and guidance and gone on to successful careers in all sectors,” said Dr. Cilento, dean of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, “and he is well deserving of this award.”
Della-Giustina has published 12 textbooks on safety management that have become standard teaching references throughout the U.S. and abroad. In the corporate sector, his writings are widely used as the foundation upon which company-wide safety programs are built. Most recently, he authored the second edition of Safety and Environmental Management, which was published in 2007 by Government Institutes.
He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from American International College in Springfield, Mass., and serves on that institution’s Board of Trustees. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. As a faculty member at WVU, he served for 17 years as chair of the Department of Safety and Environmental Management.
In addition to his involvement with ASSE, Della-Giustina is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, the National Education Association, the American School and Community Safety Society of America, the American Association of Higher Education, the American School Health Association, the National Fire Protection Association, and the American Society for Testing and Materials.
Dell-Giustina has received many other national and international awards, including being inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame by the National Safety Council.
He is the editor of the Safety Forum, published by the School and Community Safety Society. He also has been a member of numerous committees with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Committee on Fire Brigades.
