West Virginia University was recently named a 2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Host Campus.
Awarded by West Virginia Campus Compact, the distinction includes a $340 mini-grant, funded by North Carolina Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
“Host Campuses will be using mini-grant funding to honor Dr. King by meeting community needs, making Martin Luther King Day a day of service rather than leisure,” said Franchesca Nestor, director of the West Virginia Campus Compact.
The West Virginia Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of college and university presidents dedicated to promoting service throughout higher education.
“There are currently 22 West Virginia Campus Compact member institutions, and the fact that West Virginia University’s proposal was one of those selected for funding demonstrates WVU’s strong commitment to service and to the community,” Nestor said.
WVU will be using its mini-grant to implement an important service project on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2010. The University is organizing a “Living the Dream Day” to clean and restock local school libraries and do literacy activities.
Along with WVU, Bluefield State College, Concord University, Marshall University, Potomac State College of WVU, West Virginia Northern Community College and WVU at Parkersburg were also named West Virginia Campus Compact 2010 MLK Day of Service Host Campuses.
