Students competing in West Virginia University’s Campus Cup will do more than try their skills at tug o’ war, basketball, swimming and corn hole – they will learn how to work as a team.

The annual Campus Cup is a week-long WVU Housing and Residential Education wellness program meant to promote a healthy lifestyle, sportsmanship, teamwork and community in WVU’s 14 residence halls.

The competition will begin with opening ceremonies on Monday (Sept. 14). Students will compete in various events, including water pong, a 5K run, scavenger hunt and blood drive, among other things.

Each participant must pledge to follow the rules, keep faith in their teammates, keep their temper under control, maintain sportsmanlike values, monitor their pride and ego in victory and display respect for their opponent.

“I’m really excited about this year’s upcoming Campus Cup events. The Campus Cup tradition creates an opportunity for students to participate in the spirit of sportsmanship, while displaying their hall pride. Last year, over 300 students participated in the event and numerous other students turned out to cheer on their team. The important thing isn’t winning. It’s getting students involved in healthy activities and gaining the respect of their opponents by competing with integrity,” said Trish Cendana, director of WVU Residential Education.

All students who currently live in a WVU residence hall are eligible to participate. Students can sign up with their hall’s wellness coordinator.

At the opening ceremony, each hall will enter with a flag, theme song and perform a skit. The ceremony will be held on the Brooke/Braxton tower lawn on the Evansdale Residential Complex at 6 p.m.

“The opening ceremony showcases the creativity and teamwork present in each residence hall,” said Andrew Patrick, graduate assistant for WVU Residential Education.

A first, second and third place winner will be announced at a closing ceremony on Monday (Sept. 28). Refreshments will be provided and all are welcome to attend.
