John A. Bolt, who spent 22 years working as an editor and manager for the Associated Press, most recently as the West Virginia state bureau chief, has been named West Virginia University assistant director for News and Information Services.

Bolt, a graduate of Clemson University, spent nearly a decade in Dallas working as an editor and assistant bureau chief before moving to Charleston in 1997. There, he was responsible for overseeing all news coverage, supervising a staff of 11 reporters and managing a budget of more than $1 million. During his time in the state capital, he raised the national profile and reputation of the bureau, resulting in increased coverage for West Virginia.

“John has covered West Virginia – its people, programs and issues, including higher education – for many years,” said Becky Lofstead, assistant vice president for communications. “He’s a storyteller and an experienced news manager, who will now be putting his knowledge and skills to work for West Virginia University.”

In his new position as assistant director, Bolt will help to plan and manage the work of News and Information Services, developing story ideas, new media vehicles and distribution models; reaching out to core audiences; fielding media inquiries and advising University communicators.

“I can’t wait to help WVU tell its many stories,” Bolt said. “It’s an exciting and important time in the life of this institution and I’m proud to be here and be involved in sharing the news with all the various audiences who care about WVU.”

Bolt is familiar with the University, having served as a member of the visiting committee and as an adjunct instructor at the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism.

Bolt has also worked as the director of strategic communications for the Charleston-based Progressity, Inc., where he fulfilled the writing and media needs of clients, and as stated clerk of the Presbytery of West Virginia, the regional governing body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

“John’s experience as a leader in the always-evolving media industry will help News and Information Services as we use new platforms to tell stories in different and more meaningful ways,” said NIS Director Dan Kim.

Bolt is married to Margaret Bolt and they have two grown children, both of whom graduated from WVU: Greg received a Master of Science in Physical Education in 2001 and Julia a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies in 2007.

Bolt will begin his new duties Sept. 8.
