West Virginia University has named a long-time foreign languages professor as its new Associate Provost for International Programs.


Michael Lastinger, who has worked for WVU since 1989, most recently as the interim director of International Programs, is expected to assume his new post on Aug. 16.


As associate provost, Lastinger will be responsible for providing leadership and vision for the internationalization of West Virginia University, developing new programs and increasing the number of students and faculty who participate in international study, partnerships, and exchanges.


He has taught and created more than a dozen classes at WVU from elementary French to literary criticism, and received more than $37,000 in grants for research and course development. He also served as chairman of the Faculty Senate, as a faculty representative on the Board of Governors and as a member of dozens of WVU committees.


He has an outstanding record of service and commitment to this University and we know hell bring that same energy to his new position as Associate Provost of International Programs,said Interim Provost E. Jane Martin.Hes already done an exceptional job as the interim director of the program.


The WVU Associate Provost for International Programs search committee included: Keith Garbutt, Dean of the Honors College; George Lies, Special Program Coordinator in the Office of International Programs; Sue Day-Perroots, Dean of Extended Learning; Michael Wilhelm, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars; and Jonathan Cumming, Associate Provost for Graduate Academic Affairs.


Lastinger received a bachelors degree in French from Valdosta State University in 1976, and later earned both a masters degree in French and a Ph.D. in foreign languages from the University of Georgia.
