West Virginia University is holding agreenposter competition for middle and high school students in Monongalia County. The idea is to encourage young people to ponder sustainability issues.
On Wednesday, May 27, the WVU Environmental Conservation Awareness Now (WE CAN ) program and the College of Human Resources and Education will sponsor the WE CAN Young Ambassadors Poster Competition from 9:30 a.m.-noon in the Mountainlair Gold Ballroom.
We are trying to take sustainability beyond our campus boundaries to further WVU s outreach, marketing and recruiting efforts,said Clement Solomon, director of the WVU Office of Sustainability.We are starting small this year, but the eventual goal is to take this competition statewide in 3-5 years.
Through their posters, students will have an opportunity to explore their ideas on how innovative, green practices and technologies could affect their community and future.
WE CAN defines sustainability on its Web site (wecan.wvu.edu) asa multidimensional way of thinking and acting that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
This is the first partnership between officials from the WVU Office of Sustainability and the College of Human Resources and Education.
Our College of Human Resources and Education is delighted to be able to partner with the WVU Office of Sustainability on this endeavor, and we hope that this is just the beginning of our joint endeavors with this office,said Jim Rye, associate research dean.
Student teams will be judged on focus, creativity, clarity, visual appeal and potential impact. Middle and high school students will be judged separately. First place will receive $500; second place, $250; third place, $125. The winning team will also receive a school trophy.
