From Frank Lloyd Wright to Facebook, West Virginia University is offering an eclectic mix of courses this summer (May 18-Aug. 6), including more than 400 online courses.

Summer class registration is open for all WVU undergraduate students. Registration begins April 28 for non-WVU students.

Last year, WVU adopted a flexible summer term that allows departments to offer courses in one, three, six, nine and 12-week segments. Students register for one term and can plan their classes around their summer work and vacation schedules.

In addition to general education courses like English, math and science, students can enroll in some of these new courses:

Facebook: Friend or Foe is an online course examining current issues in Net citizenship;

The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright is a three-week class that includes a field trip to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob in nearby Pennsylvania;

Marine Ecology is a one-week class that studies the Atlantic coast ecosystems in a marine science facility in Great South Bay, N.J.

Media Relations in Sport is offered in the new online sport communication minor; and

The Tradition of Hunting, an online class, explores the cultural and spiritual role of hunting in society.

We recognize that students want to work and travel in the summer, so weve developed a schedule that accommodates them,said Sue Day-Perroots, dean of Extended Learning and summer sessions.We are offering more Web classes than ever, and students are increasingly choosing to take an online course in addition to an on-campus or study abroad course in the summer.

The summer term provides an opportunity for students to focus on challenging courses or take general education courses to allow more time for major courses during the rest of the year. Students also use summer to earn additional credits or increase their GPA , and they benefit from the one term by having access all summer to the Student Recreation Center and the WVU Libraries.

WVU also has a commitment to provide continuing education for K-12 educators.

We offer hundreds of courses around the state in cooperation with RESAs (Regional Education Service Agencies) and county boards of education,Day-Perroots said.We are literally teaching courses around the state, around the globe and around the clock.
