West Virginia University Womens Studies 2009 Outstanding Alumna Kelley Burd will speak about her experiences in AmeriCorps and other work she has been doing since graduation Wednesday (April 22) at WVU .


The presentation will be from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Monongalia Room of the Mountainlair .


Students in the womens studies capstone and graduate seminar will also discuss their service-learning projects and offer advice for students thinking about taking a service-learning course. Carissa McBurney, a graduate assistant for the Center for Civic Engagement , will be on hand to answer questions.


The womens studies capstone has a service-learning focus. Students apply what they have learned as a womens studies major or minor toward solving a societal problem. The course partners with the WVU Center for Civic Engagement to place students with community organizations that address needs in the Morgantown area.


Past projects have included teaching courses at a womens prison, providing shower packs and health information to the homeless, running food drives, cleaning up Deckers Creek and many others.
