University Police are investigating a robbery that took place shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday (April 18) on West Virginia Universitys Evansdale Campus.

The victim, a WVU student, told police he was walking from University Avenue to Lincoln Hallnear the trash dumpsters by the residence hallwhen a man with a knife approached him and demanded his wallet.

The student complied and was not injured, WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts said. The suspect fled behind the Evansdale Residential Complex toward WVU Parking Area 50.

The suspect is described as a black male, at least 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black T-shirt with silver writing and blue jeans. According to witnesses, the suspect may have had a white male accomplice.

Anyone with information is asked to contact University Police at 304-293-2677 (293-COPS).

Meanwhile, Roberts urged everyone to be alert and reminded students and others to exercise caution when walking around campus.

University Police offer the following safety tips:

When traveling on foot or in a car, pay attention to your surroundings. If you sense something is wrong, leave the area immediately.

When traveling on foot, travel in numbers of two, three or in large groups.

When walking alone, avoid isolated areas, shortcuts and deserted parking lots.

If you see someone suspicious or feel you are being followed, go to a populated area or well-lit area or activate one of the Blue Tower emergency phones on campus. Dont be afraid to call the police if you suspect you are being followed.

If you are a victim of a robbery, make a mental note of the description of the suspect. If a vehicle is involved, try to get the license plate number (if safe to do so), call the police and report the incident as quickly as possible. Quick reporting and a good description may give police the information they need to quickly apprehend the suspect.
