West Virginia University is looking for a student with more than just a dream of donning the buckskins. Its seeking a student with a passion for the gold and blue.

Applications are being accepted for the 2009-10 Mountaineer . WVU s mascot cheers at athletic events, energizes fans and represents both the University and state.

The mascots chief responsibilities include attending football and basketball games and other athletic events.

The Mountaineer also visits the WVU Childrens Hospital and West Virginia schools, gets involved in community events and participates in alumni and other University activities.

Applications can be picked up at the Elizabeth Moore Hall, Mountainlair and Evansdale Residential Complex front desksor downloaded at http://www.wvu.edu/documents/MountaineerMascotApplication2009-2010.pdf through Friday, Feb. 6. All applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA .

The selection process includes an application, which includes five essay questions; interview; and cheer-off competition. The committee will extend interviews to as many as 10 mascot hopefuls based on their applications.

Following the interviews, the top four applicants will compete in a cheer-off at the March 4 WVU -DePaul University mens basketball game. Finalists will don replica buckskins and be evaluated on performance and interaction with the crowd.

The new Mountaineer will be announced at the March 7 WVU -University of Louisville mens basketball game.

The mascot selection committee is made up of a chair, co-chair and nine membersfive student representatives, two athletic officials and two employees.
