A West Virginia University faculty member will give a talk onA History of West Virginias State Capitolsat 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 19) at the International Mothers Day Shrine in Grafton.
Chad Proudfoot is coordinator of the Cultural Resource Management and Master of Legal Studies programs within the Division of Public Administration at WVU . His talk is free and open to the public.
West Virginias capital seesawed between Charleston and Wheeling during its founding and early years of statehood. With each move, a new building was constructed as the two cities battled to claim the title of West Virginia capital.
Proudfoots lecture will discuss the history and architecture of buildings that have served as West Virginias Capitol, both in Charleston and Wheeling. Stories include topics about the 1921 Capitol fire, the temporarypasteboardCapitol and the current Capitol Complex.
Proudfoot earned a bachelors degree in political science and masters degrees in public administration and history from WVU . He is also vice chairman of the West Virginia Capitol Building Commission and serves on the International Mothers Day Shrine board of trustees.
The event is sponsored by the International Mothers Day Shrines Community Education Institute, an organization that provides free educational programs to benefit the public on a variety of topics. Free parking will be available, and a reception will follow.
