Akkarai Subhalakshmi , who was a child prodigy in India, will present a guest violin recital Tuesday, Nov. 18, at West Virginia University .

The performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall of the Creative Arts Center . The event is free and open to the public.

Subhalakshmi began giving violin solo and vocal performances at the age of 8. She had her initial two years of training at Nadha Brahma Vidyalaya with the late V. Janakiraman.

Now 24, she is under the guidance of the Swara Raga Sudha Violin School run by her father, Akkarai S. Swamynathan. She is not only an expert violinist but also a well-recognized vocalist.

She gives violin accompaniment to eminent artists in India and also gives classical violin programs all over the country and abroad. She participated in an Indo-Russian Cultural exchange program in 1996 and has also visited Japan, German, Italy, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

She has won many awards, including the Best Violinist Award from the Indian Fine Arts Society in 2001.
