Graduate students in the Department of English at West Virginia University are selling books to raise money to bring nationally known writers and regional scholars to campus.
The book salesponsored by the English Graduate Organization and the Council of Writerswill be from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 13 in 130 Colson Hall.
The sale will feature a wide variety of books donated by WVU faculty, staff and students and include everything from trade paperbacks to textbooks that are great for leisure reading or gifts. Prices will range from 50 cents to $2, and there will also be a raffle.
This unique fundraiser was initiated last year when members of the Department of English were cleaning out their offices and moving from Stansbury Hall to the newly renovated Colson Hall. The donated books helped to raise several hundred dollars, and members are hoping this years event will bring in the same support.
The book sale is likely to be the biggest fundraiser of the year for both organizations, said Lori DAngelo, president of COW and a student in the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing .The proceeds help us cover some of the costs of each groups initiatives.
EGO will use the proceeds to sponsor the annual spring graduate colloquium, which attracts English graduate students from universities in the region to present and discuss their work and features a lecture by a prominent literary scholar.
COW will use the funding to help cover the costs associated with bringing a well-known writer to speak on campus, something the organization does each year.
Both organizations are open to graduate students.
EGO encourages students in all English programs to participate, and the officers serve as representatives on the graduate program committee. Twice a semester, an English faculty member is invited to speak to the organization.
COW , made up of students in the M.F.A. program, sponsors readings for undergraduate and graduate students and produces an M.F.A. student-centered publication.
