West Virginia Universitys annual beard-growing competition kicks off with a shave at noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Mountainlair commons area.

Organizers are hoping that a record number of students come out for the event, a prelude to Mountaineer Week activities Nov. 8-16.

Mountaineer mascot Michael Squires and Miss Tucker Valley Nicole Riggleman will emcee the event.

This is a great opportunity for students to earn some extra money while showing off school spirit and pride for the state of West Virginia, said Michelle Goodliff, Mountaineer Week vice chair.

WVU students can sign up at the Mountainlair information desk anytime prior to the start of the contest.

Judging will take place at noon Wednesday, Nov. 12, on theLair grand staircase. Five faculty members will decide which participant has grown the best beard. Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($100), second ($75) and third ($50) place.
