University Police want West Virginia University students to know that what they may consider a simple prank could land them in jail.

Two students have been arrested for falsely activating the WVU campus blue tower emergency phones, said Lt. Randy Friend, crime prevention officer. They face up to $500 in fines and six months in jail.

Thirty-seven blue tower emergency phones are located around campus that ring directly into the 911 communications center when activated.

Our officers sometimes respond to as many as 15 to 20 false activations of blue tower emergency phones over a single weekend,he said.

WVU cadetsvolunteer student patrolshave been observing certain areas for false activations of phones, Friend said. Their surveillance resulted in the recent arrests.

The phones are in place for your legitimate use and to improve campus safety,Friend said.Please use the phones when honestly needed, but dont jeopardize your future and risk arrest and prosecution for simply pushing a button and falsely activating an emergency phone.
