Applications are being accepted for the second class of West Virginia University Puskar Leadership Scholars for 2008-09. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Puskar Leadership Scholars participate in a fully funded set of learning activities through the academic year designed to enhance their skills and knowledge of effective leadership. Scholars participate in national and state conferences and interact with leaders in various fields. A book and information technology allowance is provided to recipients as part of the program.
The endowed program is in support of the 18-credit academic minor and related activities sponsored by the Leadership Studies Program in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences .
This program furthers one of the overarching goals for establishment of the leadership studies academic minor at WVU creating and retaining in West Virginia, the region and nation more and better prepared leaders at every level,said Larry Cote , director of the Leadership Studies Program.
WVU undergraduate students selected to become Puskar Scholars will be required to meet certain standards to be considered and maintain those standards if accepted. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA , commit to two-year continuing undergraduate study at WVU and earn a grade of A- or better in Principles of Leadership, the first core course in the leadership studies minor.
Puskar Scholars may be from any discipline and enrolled in any major field of undergraduate studies at WVU . At the time of application, students must be registered for courses at the WVU Morgantown campus with two years of undergraduate study at WVU remaining. Students may remain as Puskar Scholars in their senior year provided they continue to fulfill their promise as leadership studies scholars, maintain the requisite GPA at the time of their selection and prove to be good campus citizens.
Each scholar is expected to participate in the various events and activities sponsored and co-sponsored by the Leadership Studies Program, in particular those for Puskar Scholars only.
Four Puskar Leadership Scholars selected for the 2007-08 academic year were invited to continue this program in their senior year: Tyler Blankenship, a news editorial major from Charleston; Nelson France, a political science major from New York, N.Y.; Whitney Peters, a public relations major from Madison; and Cassie Werner, a political science major from Clarksburg.
A $2 million gift from businessman and philanthropist Milan Puskar made this program possible. In recognition of Puskars gift, the program was later named The Milan Puskar Leadership Scholars Program. The donation was made through the WVU Foundation , a private nonprofit corporation that generates and provides support for WVU .
