Five West Virginia University alumni were named to the WVU Foundation Board of Directors at its annual meeting Saturday (Aug. 16). Each will serve a three-year term.

They are:

  • Irene C. Berger of Charleston, a circuit court judge in Kanawha County since 1994. She previously served in the U.S. Attorneys Office and the Kanawha County Prosecutors Office, where she worked for 12 years. Berger earned her law degree from WVU in 1979 and a bachelors degree in mathematics in 1976. She is a member of the WVU Student Affairs Visiting Committee and former president of the WVU Alumni Association Board of Directors.
  • Patrice A. Harris, medical director of the Fulton County Department of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases in Atlanta. The Bluefield native also maintains a private psychiatry practice in Atlanta and is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University. Harris earned three degrees from WVU , including a bachelors degree in psychology in 1982, a masters in counseling psychology in 1986 and a medical degree in 1992. She is a member of WVU s Academy of Distinguished Alumni.
  • Pamela Maphis Larrick, a strategic consultant with Interpublic Group, a global provider of advertising and marketing services based in New York City. At Interpublic, Larrick has also served as CEO of two of its global agencies, FCBi Worldwide and MRM WorldWide. Most recently, she held an executive position at the merged agency, Draftfcb. Larrick graduated from WVU in 1972 with a bachelors degree in journalism, and she currently serves on the School of Journalisms advisory committee. A native of Clarksburg, she also is a member of WVU s Academy of Distinguished Alumni.
  • Benjamin M. Statler, a retired coal executive from Naples, Fla., and McMurray, Pa., who earned his bachelors degree in mining engineering from WVU in 1973. Statler began his career with Consolidation Coal in 1969, retiring as senior vice president of mining for CONSOL Energy in 1999. He then formed his own mining consulting company. In 2003, Benjamin M. Statler, LLC and Questor Management Co., LLC acquired the assets of U.S. Steel Mining and founded PinnOak Resources, LLC . Statler sold the company in July 2007. Last October, Statler and his wife, Jo, announced a $25 million commitment to WVU , the single largest gift to the University.
  • Fred T. Tattersall, retired CEO of Tattersall Advisory Group (a Wachovia Bank subsidiary) and current chairman of 1607 Capital Partners LLC , an investment management company located in Richmond, Va. He earned his bachelors degree in finance from WVU in 1970. A native of Charleston, Tattersall is a trustee of the University of Richmond, serving on both its executive and endowment fund investment committees. In addition, he serves on the board of trustees for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and also is a national trustee of The First Tee program. Tattersall is past chairman of the board of governors for The Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia.

In other business, Dan R. Moore of Charleston was elected board chairman. He is owner of Moore Auto Group, headquartered in Williamson, and has been a member of the WVU Foundation Board of Directors since 1996. Moore replaces David W. Hamstead (63) of Frederick, Md., who has served as chair since 2005. Other officers elected to one-year terms were Verl O. Purdy (64), owner/president, AGDATA , Charlotte, N.C., vice chair; Janet Griffith Rogers (60,63), president, Thoughtfulness Inc., Granville, secretary; and Ralph J. Bean Jr. (63,66), a partner at Steptoe&Johnson, Clarksburg, assistant secretary.

Directors re-elected to three-year terms include Moore; Rogers; John C. Harmon (77), Lovett, Bookman, Harmon, Marks, Pittsburgh; Marshall S. Miller (66,73), president, Marshall Miller&Associates, Bluefield, Va.; and E.G.KenKendrick Jr. (65), managing general partner, Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix.

The board recognized outgoing directors Richard E. Ford (51,54) of Lewisburg and Stuart M. Robbins (65) of Delray Beach, Fla., for their longtime service and commitment to the Foundation. Ford has been on the board since 1972, Robbins since 1991. Hamstead also was honored for his service as chairman.

The WVU Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation that generates, receives and administers private gifts for the benefit of WVU .
