West Virginia University officials are saddened today (Aug. 8) to learn of the death of Carmen Gloria Sanchez Gutierrez, who was visiting Morgantown and participating in a professional exchange program.

Morgantown police officers, who investigated the case, discovered the 36-year-old Chilean womans body Thursday (Aug. 7) in the Monongahela River north of Star City. She had been missing since Monday evening following dinner with friends and was last seen in the Star City area. The West Virginia State Police confirmed the womans identity Friday.

Interim WVU President C. Peter Magrath offered condolences on behalf of the University family.

We are so sorry to learn of this tragedy and offer our sincere condolences to Mrs. Gutierrez family and friends,Magrath said.

Staff and students in the outdoor adventure program in which Gutierrez participated as an apprentice guide are also saddened, said Greg Corio, program director.

Carmen Gloria was well-liked by everyone,Corio said.She was our friend. We will miss her and want her family to know she was well-loved in West Virginia.

Counselors from WVU s Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services have been providing grief counseling to friends of Gutierrez.

University officials will also be in touch with the Gutierrez family.
