Mary RobertaBobbieBrandt has been named interim vice president for legal affairs and general counsel at West Virginia University . The appointment, effective Aug. 1, was made by former President Mike Garrison in consultation with interim President C. Peter Magrath.

Brandt, formerly associate general counsel, has worked in WVU s legal office for 10 years and also served as the Universitys interim general counsel from 2001-02.

Prior to coming to WVU , she was senior assistant attorney general for the West Virginia State College and University Systems and clerked for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and for the U.S. Department of Justice/Office of the U.S. Attorney General for the Northern District.

She also held positions with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen in Washington, D.C.; Honeywell Federal Systems Division in McLean, Va.; and Alstan Inc. in Phoenix.

Bobbie Brandt has provided legal counsel and guidance to WVU and other large organizations for over 15 years,Magrath said.She is a trusted and respected member of the legal community, and I am delighted that she has agreed to serve as the Universitys chief legal officer at this time.

Brandt is a 1991 graduate of WVU s College of Law and received her undergraduate degree in history from George Mason University. She teaches a higher education law class in WVU s College of Human Resources and Education and conducts many in-house training sessions on employment procedures as well as higher education law, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and West Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the West Virginia State Bar Association and the Monongalia County Bar Association.

She is married to Tim Marton, who recently retired from an administrative post in WVU s Office of Information Technology.

Brandt replaces Alex Macia, vice president for legal affairs, who left his position July 31.
