William N. Trumbull, Ph.D., has been named interim dean of WVU s College of Business and Economics, effective July 1.Trumbull has been with the University for 25 years and most recently served as director of the Division of Economics and Finance in the College, a position he has held since 1998. WVU officials made the announcement today (May 28).
Dr. Trumbulls track record for scholarship speaks for itself,said WVU President Mike Garrison.A 25-year member of the WVU faculty, he plays an activerole on campus, evenattending one of my initial forums where he provided insight and suggestions regarding faculty recruitment and retention. We are pleased that he has agreed to serve as interim dean.
At WVU , Trumbulls research and teaching interests include the economics of crime, transitional economies and economic evaluation, including cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis. In 1989, he was named faculty research associate for WVU s Regional Research Institute and, in 1993, he became chairperson for the Department of Economics in the College of Business and Economics.

Trumbulls teaching career began at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he earned a Ph.D. in economics. While completing his Ph.D., he was a visiting instructor at North Carolina State University. He joined the WVU faculty in 1983 as an assistant professor of economics.
During his tenure at WVU , Trumbull has taught at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. He has been heavily involved in study abroad, having developed courses on the Cuban economy, China and the transitional economies of Europe, all of which involved travel to these countries, most recently the Czech Republic and Poland. He is a recipient of the Beta Gamma Sigma (WVU Chapter) Award for Outstanding Teacher in the College of Business and Economics.
Trumbull serves on the steering committees for the major in International Studies and the major in Slavic and East European Studies, as well as the Institute for Mathematics Learning, all in WVU s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. He has several publications on economic evaluation and has conducted economic evaluations of criminal justice programs, health care technology and environmental remediation. He has also published papers on the economics of crime, public choice, the economics of foreign aid, problems in transitional economies, and other topics. He was the recipient of the 1990 Raymond Vernon Award of the Association for Policy Analysis and Management for a paper on economic evaluation. In 1994, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Donetsk State Technical University in Ukraine in recognition of his work on regional issues in transitional economies.
I am very pleased that Dr. Trumbull has accepted the position of interim dean of the College of Business and Economics,said Virginia Kleist, associate professor of Management Information Systems in the College.He has a long and distinguished career of service at our College, having been director of the Division of Economics and Finance for 10 years, and chair of the Department of Economics for five years prior to that.He has excellent experience in the management of higher education at West Virginia University and is well known in the state and the region for his many contributions.I am looking forward to working with Dr. Trumbull as we all endeavor to repair the reputation of our College in the state and across the country.
Russell Sobel, James Clark Coffman Distinguished Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies and professor of economics in the College, said Trumbull has a long list of proven accomplishments that warrant his appointment.
He is an excellent scholar, administrator, colleague and a strong leader,Sobel said.He also has an excellent reputation with our donors. Under his direction, the Ph.D. program in economics has thrived and his recruiting at WVU has made significant contributions to the quality of our faculty. He is in a position to immediately provide some future vision in terms of the development of College programs that are now in the idea stage.
Trumbull replaces R. Stephen Sears, who recently resigned his position, effective June 30.
