More than 1,300 students received diplomas from West Virginia University in December.

New graduates and their families celebrated their academic achievements at the Dec. 9 convocation at the WVU Coliseum.

Keynote speaker Carolyn Peluso Atkinsa professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at WVU who has mentored countless students, including Mountaineer standouts Steve Slaton and Pat Whiteoffered her wish list for graduates:I hopethat your college education serves you wellthat you listen to others so you can be a lifelong learnerthat you approach life with the same anticipation that you have when the �€~Pride of West Virginiaexplodes onto the fieldthat your pride swells when you see or wear the flying WVand that, as a member of the Mountaineer family, you come home.

The recipient of numerous teaching awards, Atkins was the 2005 West Virginia CASE Professor of the Year. This national teaching award, sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is based on dedication to teaching, commitment to students and innovative instructional methods. She is one of 16 WVU professors to receive the honor.
