The West Virginia University Community Arts Program is now registering students for spring classes at the Creative Arts Center.

Registration for classes in music, art, theater and dance for students of all ages will continue through Friday, Jan. 18.

The program offers private music lessons in piano, organ, voice, jazz singing, brass, percussion, woodwind, strings, Suzuki violin, harp, guitar, theory, composition, jazz improvisation and conducting.

Classes available this spring include the following:

Art

Young Peoples Saturday Art Studio classes are Primary Studio (ages 5-7) and Intermediate Studio (ages 8-10).

Other classes being offered are Design Your Own Greeting Cards (ages 8-11) and Basket Weaving for Beginners (ages 10 to adult).

New classes include SmArt Kids (ages 3-5), Mask Making/Puppetry for Kids (ages 5-8) and Introduction to Digital Photography (ages 13 and up). A new class for adults this spring is Introduction to Adobe Photoshop.

Theater

Students in the two-semester, theater productioncourse (ages 7-15) will appear in public performances of the Hans Christian Anderson playThe Little MermaidMarch 14-16 at the Creative Arts Center.

Dance

Classes include Ballet/Creative Movement (ages 3-4), Ballet (ages 5-8), Dance for the Young (ages 3-4), Creative Modern Dance (ages 5-8), Beginning/Intermediate Jazz Technique (ages 7-11) and a new class called Beginning Ballet for Teens. Classes for adults include Ballroom Dancing II and Yoga 4 Creativity.

Music

Classes are Music for Babies (infants and toddlers), Explore&Enjoy (ages 2-3), Musicland Express (ages 4-6), Suzuki Violin (ages 4 and up), Beginning Group Piano for Kids (ages 6-9), Introductory Harp Class (all ages), Maestro in the Making (high school to adult), Jazz Improvisation (ages 9 to adult), Flute Ensemble (junior high to adult), Steel Band Ensemble (ages 9 to adult), Elementary Choir (ages 7-8), Community Arts Orchestra (junior high to adult), Music Theory I (ages 8-12), Music Theory II (ages 13 to adult), Music Together for Homeschoolers (elementary and middle school ages) and the Community Arts Honors Ensemble Program (open by competitive audition).

Music classes specifically for adults include Beginning Group Piano for Adults, the WVU Community Arts Pops Choir and a new class this spring called Introduction to Music for Adults: Listening and Appreciation.

The Community Arts Program will also offer the WVU High School Summer Flute Camp with Francesca Arnone June 18-21 at the Creative Arts Center. The camp is open to all high school flutists who are entering grades 9-12.

Office hours are 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday in Room 401A of the Creative Arts Center. (Please note: The office will be closed Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.)

Students may register for classes after the official registration period ends, but a late fee will be assessed.
