The chair of West Virginia Universitys Department of Chemical Engineering was recently elected to the governing board of the Washington, D.C.-based Council for Chemical Research.

Dady Dadyburjor, a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at WVU , will assist the national organization in its mission to promote cooperation among industry, academia and government in chemical sciences, engineering education and research.

WVUs participation in the Council for Chemical Research provides important connections with leading researchers in all sectors and the opportunity to participate in policymaking efforts,Dadyburjor said.I am honored to be elected to the governing board, as it demonstrates the esteem in which our program is held among research universities in the United States.

The council advances research in chemistry, chemical engineering and related disciplines through interdisciplinary leadership collaboration across institutional and sector boundaries.

The councils membership represents most of the chemical research enterprise in the United States, currently comprising more than 200 companies, universities and government laboratories with a combined research and development budget of more than $7 billion.

Council members include researchers from leading companies and government laboratories, as well as chemistry and chemical engineering departments of 130 research universities, representing about 90 percent of the research and development investments in chemical sciences nationwide.

The organizations governing board consists of 18 directors elected by the membership to control and manage the affairs of the council.

Dadyburjor earned his bachelors degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware. He has been a member of the WVU faculty since 1983 and has chaired the Department of Chemical Engineering since 1999.

WVU s undergraduate and graduate programs in chemical engineering have both been recognized as Programs of Excellence by the WVU Board of Governors. The department is known for producing graduates who go on to become leaders in industry, academia and government.
