R. Wayne King, president and CEO of the West Virginia University Foundation, has earned recertification as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) by CFRE International.

Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards which include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service to not-for-profit organizations. King is one of more than 5,000 professionals around the world who hold the CFRE designation.

Initially, candidates must pass a rigorous written examination testing the knowledge, skills and abilities required of a fundraising executive. CFRE recipients are awarded certification for a three-year period. In order to maintain certification status, they must continue to demonstrate ongoing fundraising employment, fundraising results and continue with their professional education.

The CFRE process was developed as a way to identify for the public and employers those individuals who possess the knowledge, skills and commitment to perform fundraising duties in an effective, conscientious, ethical and professional manner,said Andrew Day, chair of CFRE International.Achievement of the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential demonstrates the level of commitment on the part of Wayne King to the WVU Foundation and the fundraising profession as a whole.

King was named president and chief executive officer of the WVU Foundation, the independent fundraising arm of the University, last July, bringing with him more than 20 years of professional fundraising experience. Before coming to Morgantown, he was president of Mercy Foundation in Des Moines, Iowa. He previously had been senior vice president for development with the Oklahoma State University Foundation and vice president for development at Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina.

CFRE International, based in Alexandria, Va., is an independent organization whose sole mission is dedicated to the certification of fundraising executives by setting standards in philanthropy.
