Do you like hiking? Would you enjoy an odyssey in the great outdoors?

The West Virginia University School of Physical Educations Adventure Sports Program will be offering two expedition-style trips to Tennessee this spring. Both are open to WVU students and the general public.

The Savage Gulf Spring Break trip is March 23-29. The registration deadline is March 14.

Participants will embark on a three-day hike through the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. After the hike, participants will have the opportunity to go rock climbing, rappelling and caving at various locations. The cost is $300 per person.

Savage Gulf is a 15,590-acre natural area in Grundy and Sequatchie counties. Carved like a giant crowfoot into the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, it is one of Tennessees most scenic wilderness areas. Its sheer sandstone cliffs and rugged canyons provide extraordinary views.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Backpacking trip is May 10-17. The deadline for registration is April 28.

Participants will hike the 70-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail through the park. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is Americas most visited national park.

The six-day hike will challenge participants with steep and rugged climbs, including a climb over Clingmans Dome, the tallest mountain in Tennessee. Participants can also expect breathtaking vistas and amazing wildlife. The cost is $350 per person. Trip fees cover transportation, camping equipment, technical gear, backcountry meals and trip guides.
