Learn more about Cherokee customs and traditions Tuesday (Nov. 6) during Mountaineer Week at West Virginia University.

Bo Taylor will give a Cherokee language and dance presentation from 5-6 p.m. in the Mountainlair Gluck Theatre on the Downtown Campus (a reception will precede the presentation).An Evening of Cherokee Dance and Conversationis free and open to the public.

Taylors presentation will give audience members a glimpse of the culture of a native people whose homelands once included much of West Virginia and whose relatives still live in the region.

The event is part of the 2007 West Virginia Native American Heritage Series sponsored by Joe Romeos I-79 Honda-Mazda. The WVU Native American Studies Program in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and Mountaineer Week are hosting the presentation with assistance from WVU ’s Dance Minor Program in the Division of Theatre.

Were excited to welcome Mr. Taylor to WVU ,said Bonnie Brown, coordinator of the WVU Native American Studies program.We value our relationship with the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and this cultural presentation is another way of strengthening friendships between WVU and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation, while at the same time honoring the diverse native heritage of our state.

Taylor is an archivist at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and also lectures on Cherokee music, dance and spirituality. He has a bachelors degree in anthropology with a minor in Cherokee studies from Western Carolina University.

Taylor has taught the Cherokee language at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in the Cherokee History and Culture Institute and through the Cultural Resources Office of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

In addition, he is part of the Warriors of AniKituhwa, an award-winning dance group based in Cherokee, N.C.

Designated as official cultural ambassadors by the tribal council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation, the Warriors of AniKituhwa have performed at Colonial Williamsburg, the National Museum of the American Indian and throughout the Southeast.
