This years Mountaineer Week at West Virginia University will be one for the books, courtesy of the WVU Press.

The WVU Press will again participate in the Mountaineer Week craft fair Friday through Sunday, Nov. 2-4, in the Mountainlair. Look for new and forthcoming titles at discounted prices for holiday gift giving.

In addition to book sales, authors will visit the WVU Press booth to discuss their books and autograph copies.

Stop by the booth between 5-7 p.m. Friday, and meet Melinda Hicks and C. Belmont Keeney, editors ofDefending the Homeland: Historical Perspectives on Radicalism, Terrorism, and State Responses.

They are doctoral candidates in the Department of History, and their book is a collection of essays on everything from homeland security to West Virginiasmine warsof the early 20th century.

Between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, the WVU Press will host graphic artist Chris Sperandio and authors Shirley Stewart Burns and Robert J. Kapsch who will discuss their writing and other contributions to their books.

Sperandio, a Kingwood native and acclaimed graphic artist who studied printmaking at WVU , will sign the book hes the subject of:Kartoon Kings: The Graphic Work of Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio,which was edited by Paul Krainak and published this month by the WVU Press.

Its the first study and collection of Sperandio and Grennans video work, billboards and other public art endeavors over the past 15 years. The book also contains an interview with Sperandio conducted by WVU art professor Kristina Olson, and theyll talk about the book Friday evening during its launch at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in University Town Centre.

Robert J. Kapsch, author ofThe Potomac Canal: George Washington and the Waterway West,will be at the WVU Press booth from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Kapsch is recognized as an authority on canals and canal engineering in America. His large-format book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, blueprints and other drawings.

Also on Saturday, Shirley Stewart Burns, a Wyoming County native and WVU graduate (bachelors degree in journalism, Master of Social Work degree and doctorate in history) will visit the booth from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday to discuss her book,Bringing Down the Mountains: The Impact of Mountaintop Removal on Southern West Virginia Communities,which the WVU Press released in October.

Her presentation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Mountainlairs Laurel Room. Shell also be at the WVU Press booth from 2-4 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Potomac State College of WVU English professor Kevin Stewart will read from his short story-novella collection,The Way Things Always Happen Here,in the Robinson Reading Room at WVU s Downtown Library.

Stewart is a Princeton native, and his book was published Vandalia Press, the literary imprint of the WVU Press. Hes received numerous writing awards, including the Texas Review Novella Prize forMargot.He has a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Arkansas, along with degrees in English, architecture and civil engineering.
